63-year-old model Professor Lyn Slater was discovered quite by accident when, waiting for a friend for a lunch date outside the Lincoln Center during New York Fashion Week, she was pounced on by the media. With a hip, edgy style she certainly stood out from the crowds!
A Fordham University professor, Slater became an Accidental Icon and turned her adventures into a popular blog where she talks about ageism in the fashion industry. She also has a faithful following on Instagram.
Professor Slater has never been one to dress according to her age and says that, “I think, if you are comfortable in what you’re wearing, no matter how old you are and you’re owning it, you’re going to look completely fine.”
Since being discovered, Professor Slater has been signed to the world’s leading agency Elite London, and has already worked with popular brands such as Mango and Uniqlo. She says that, “I’m certain that if you feel comfortable in your own clothes, it’s completely irrelevant how old you are. Fashion and my style help me struggle against that invisibility that comes with age.” As well as modelling, Professor Slater is also a spokesperson against ageism in the fashion industry.
