“Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” Chosen as 2024 Met Gala Theme

The Met Gala is the most anticipated fashion event of the year, and expectations are running high following the theme announcement. Next year’s event will be dreamier than ever after the Costume Institute announced “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” as the next theme.

According to Vogue’s official statement, “the upcoming show will feature approximately 250 items drawn from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection – some very rarely seen in public before – and display them in an entirely new way.”

This means the Costume Institute will fully embrace modern technology to mimic the movement, feel, scent, and sound of the fashion garments on display. Video animation, light projection, artificial intelligence, and illusion techniques will come together to create an immersive sensorial experience.

“Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” will chronicle 400 years of fashion history, ranging from English Elizabethan-era designs of the 17th century to modern-day creations by such industry trailblazers as Phillip Lim and Stella McCartney. Designs by such fashion icons as Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, and Christian Dior will be the centerpieces of this exhibition.

The Met Gala will return to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on May 6, 2024, while the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibition will be on display at the Costume Institute between May 10 and September 2, 2024.
