Keep Your Hair Healthy

Despite your long and hard efforts to keep your hair healthy, sometimes it’s just not enough. Little things such as perms, dye jobs, and unnecessary blowouts can create quite significant damaging effects on your hair. Fortunately, there are many steps and methods that can be taken to guarantee the shiny, happy, and healthy hair you deserve to have.

Keep Your Hair Healthy

Know When To Wash
While many people prefer to wash their hair everyday, washing too much can actually dry your hair out and create frizz and breakage. Instead, for most people washing your hair twice a week is perfectly sufficient. If you hair gets oily quickly to where you feel like you need to wash everyday, use a dry shampoo to remove the sweat and grease from your scalp.

Don’t Use Too Much Dry Shampoo
Using it too often and in place of wet shampooing can cause residue to build up on the scalp, resulting in itching and inflammation.

Use Conditioner
Many people choose to not use conditioner because of the rumors that it will actually make your hair look greasy, despite its efforts to clean. To avoid any greasiness, only apply the conditioner to the ends and mid-lengths of your hair. Conditioning your hair is important as it provides moisture for your hair, making it softer and more manageable, especially when brushing after a shower. Using leave-in conditioners are widely recommended, as they penetrate deep into your hair cuticles to to heal them more completely.

Pat Your Hair Dry
After a shower, try to dry your hair with a towel as little as possible. Roughly towel drying can create friction to the hair cuticles, causing frizz, dryness, and weakness, which can potentially break the hair. Work towards saving old cotton t shirts to use as towel wraps after a shower; they don’t rough up the cuticles as much. If you don’t have old cotton shirts, pat your hair with your towel rather than rub it to remove any excess moisture. To minimize any damages even furthur, it is highly recommended to air dry your hair overnight.

Keep Your Hair Healthy

Go Easy On Knots
Wet hair is more susceptible to damage, meaning it can be more likely to break. Although ripping through knots can be oddly satisfying, it is important to be gentle when removing tangles. Wide tooth combs work best when detangling hair. Remember to start from the ends up rather than the roots down. Try to refrain from untangling your hair with your fingers while still in the shower, for it creates more damage as well as hair loss.

Use A Hair Dryer Sparingly
Using a hair dryer relatively frequently can dry out your hair, causing an increasingly amount of breakage and split ends. If you can, let your hair dry out naturally as much as possible. If you choose to use a hairdryer, don’t hold it too close to your hair, as it will cause your hair to burn. Make sure to always apply a heat protection spray or serum to the hair before drying. After a blowout, if your hair still feels hot, that means it’s still frying. Hit the cold button on the blow dryer to cool it down.

While these methods won’t guarantee you 100% damage free hair, following these steps are crucial to maintaining happy and healthy hair.
