Pantries are an ideal place to store a large number of foods and spices, particularly as they keep perishables and non-perishables alike out of harmful sunlight. Still, you may be surprised to learn that some food items are best kept away from the pantry. Avoid storing these foods in the pantry at all costs.
Pure Maple Syrup
Once you’ve opened a bottle of pure maple syrup, make sure to put it into the fridge rather than back in the pantry. In addition to making the maple syrup lose some of its flavor, the pantry can be home to mold and other microorganisms that could harm your delicious maple syrup.
Organic Peanut Butter
Although organic peanut butter is healthier thanks to its lack of preservatives, it’s the fact that it has no preservatives that allow the peanut butter to become rancid faster. Always store organic peanut butter in the fridge to preserve it for as long as possible.
Flour
Between the lack of light, the presence of moisture, and heat, flour can become moldy very quickly when stored in a dark pantry. Either buy flour in smaller quantities so you don’t have to store leftovers or keep it in an airtight food storage container.
