If ever you head to your local farmer’s market and see all the fresh produce on display out in the open, you may be unsure as to whether it’s safe or not to store your newly purchased food on your kitchen counter instead of the fridge or pantry. Here are some foods that you should avoid storing on the counter at all costs.
Eggs
If you buy fresh eggs from the farmer’s market, it’s sometimes alright to leave them on the kitchen counter as they’ve been freshly laid, meaning there’s a protective layer from the laying process. For store-bought eggs, however, it’s better to store them in the refrigerator as this will extend their shelf-life.
Potatoes
As you probably know, potatoes are not something you store in the fridge. Still, they’re not meant to be placed on the counter either, as heat and sunlight can cause them to go green The best place to store potatoes is in a cupboard or drawer out of the sunlight.
Cucumbers
Cool and refreshing cucumbers do not cope well in humidity or around excess moisture, ironic seeing as they have such a high water content. In fact, this means that they won’t be able to last on your counter for more than an hour or two. It’s best to refrigerate cucumbers as soon as you bring them home so as to avoid any issues.
